In retrospect, FAM’s history sounds like a story of success: Back in 1984, a group of highly involved female scientists founded the ”Verein zur Förderung der Frauenakademie München e.V.“ (i.e. the association for the promotion of the Women’s Academy of Munich reg. assn). Since 1992, this association officially goes by the title ”Frauenakademie München e.V.“ (i.e. “Women’s Academy Munich reg. assn”) and in 1994, the State of Bavaria admitted the FAM as a non-university research institution.

FAM’s task is the promotion of women’s and gender studies, the communication of this knowledge to the public and the practice of equal opportunity policy. In order to do so, FAM organises public events, conducts and publishes studies and offers a variety of advanced trainings, consultation and qualification.

Since 1996, FAM is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. FAM in its function as a research and educational institution has been dealing with numerous relevant topics over the years and interfered in the socio-political debate. The founders therefore often referred to FAM as a “school of intervention” as FAM taught women to transport feminist approaches into the socio-political and scientific debate.
